What Are IRP Tags?

IRP Tags are license plates issued under the International Registration Plan (IRP) – a cooperative agreement among U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces to allow commercial motor carriers to operate across multiple jurisdictions using a single registration.

Who needs IRP?

Any commercial vehicle that operates interstate (across state or provincial lines) and meets one or more of the following:

  • Is used in a combination that exceeds 26,001 pounds GVW
  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,001 pounds
  • Has three or more axles, regardless of weight
What IRP Provides:
  • A single registration plate (IRP Tag) and cab card that lists the jurisdictions in which the vehicle is registered to operate.
  • The license plate is typically issued by the base jurisdiction (your home state or province), but it’s valid across all IRP member jurisdictions.
Fees

Fees are based on:

  • The percentage of miles traveled in each jurisdiction.
  • Each jurisdiction’s own registration rates.

This ensures each jurisdiction gets its fair share of the registration revenue.

Transporter Plates

Transporter license plates differ from International Registration Plan (IRP) plates in that their use is restricted to specific purposes. They may only be used in the following situations:

  • To facilitate the delivery of new or used motor vehicles, trucks, trailers, or buses between manufacturers, distributors, dealers, sellers, or purchasers;
  • To move a mobile office, a mobile classroom, a mobile or manufactured home, or house trailer;
  • To drive a motor vehicle or pull a trailer that is part of the inventory of a dealer to and from a motor vehicle or trailer trade show or exhibition or to, during, and from a parade in which the motor vehicle or trailer is used; or
  • To drive special mobile equipment from the manufacturer of the equipment to a facility of a dealer; or from one facility of a dealer to another facility of a dealer.
  • To transport vehicles from or to your base state.

Name Change

If your company name has changed due to rebranding or restructuring, TFIG will manage the name change process with your base jurisdiction, ensuring a seamless update to all IRP documents.

Address Change

Moved to a new location? We’ll submit the necessary paperwork to update your IRP account and ensure your cab card and registration reflect the correct information.

Title Reattachment

If you have an IRP tag and complete any type of title work—such as a lien release, name change, title transfer, address change, or similar—the state will automatically cancel the current registration on that vehicle.

To avoid any compliance issues, please contact our office after completing title work so we can ensure your truck remains legally registered and road-ready.
